ADVENT 4 – MARY: WOMBS & MANGERS
In our final episode in the advent series we sit with Mary the mother of Jesus. Mary is completely neglected in one of the two retellings of the birth story, but becomes the main character in Luke’s version.
What might it have meant for our early listeners to have Mary revered and celebrated so strongly – indeed depicted as the ideal follower whom we should emulate? As listeners and followers today, how might we in our lives be a womb, or be a manger? How might we become a holding place for love to be born anew?
The featured song in this introduction was ‘We Are Bethlehem’, written by song and chant writer Alana Levandoski. To find more of her work including a children’s meditation album project visit: alanalevandoski.com.
The featured poem was Cheryl Lawrie’s Instead – A Christmas Prayer(2016). Find more of Cheryl’s writing at holdthisspace.org.au

ADVENT 3 – JOSEPH & ELIZABETH: MIDWIVES AND COMPANIONS
We look at both Elizabeth and Joseph – the only characters in the birth narratives privy to the claims about this ensuing baby. Both characters play brief yet pivotal cameos of support and care and help usher in the birth of Jesus. Joseph, in particular, must do so in the face of significant scandal –an often overlooked aspect of his journey.

ADVENT 2 – MAGI: GIFTS AND REFUGE FROM BEYOND
In the Beyondering advent series we will be dusting off the layers of familiarity and therefore complacency to attempt to uncover aspects of meaning in this multi-layered and multidimensional ancient story of Christ being birthed in our midst, but yet which are often glossed over or suppressed.
In Advent 2 we look at the mysterious Magi – curious foreigners who are the first on the scene in Matthew’s birth narrative. What are we to make of these mysterious star gazers in this scene? What does their presence point towards for us today as we think about receiving gifts from strange places beyond us?

Advent Episode 1 – Keeping Herod in Christmas
In the Beyondering advent series we will be dusting off the layers of familiarity and therefore complacency to attempt to uncover aspects of meaning in this multi-layered and multidimensional ancient story of Christ being birthed in our midst, but yet which are often glossed over or suppressed.
In Advent 1 Beyondering look at Herod the Great –an often neglected character in our recalling of the story. Despite missing out on Christmas carols and cards, he is the backdrop to the entire Christmas story in Matthew’s telling. Matt and Lucas explore who Herod was and what his role in this drama provokes and evokes. They will also explore what the voices of Herod might be today – in our political structures, our cultural narratives and even in our inner worlds.
The featured song in this introduction was ‘No Matter What Kings Say’, written by song and chant writer Alana Levandoski.

Episode 2.9.1 – Peter Rollins: Trump dump, faith stump and book pump
Because one episode with Peter Rollins just isn’t enough.
We had to be quite brutal in our editing of our interview with Peter Rollins and feel there is some gold you will also appreciate. Having landed in LA the morning of Trump becoming President, this cutting room floor episode includes Pete’s initial reaction and insights.
We also felt we were way to lenient in our editing of his attempt to deal with Faith’s zinger so the unabridged attempt is in there too, along with an explanation of his most recent book The Divine Magician.
In order to find more information about that book as well as others, events, articles and more check out peterrollins.com.

Episode 2.9 – Peter Rollins: Philoso-raptor
Beyondering finally land their long awaited interview with Peter Rollins to see what faith looks like through the lens of a philosopher.
This is a way of seeing, a discipline that helps us question our questions, understand how we understand and allow us to see how we see. Peter Rollins is a philosopher who utilises psychoanalytic theory and in this episode helps us reflect on why we believe what we believe.

Episode 2.8 – Emergence – See?
What’s emerging? What forms and shapes of sacred community are in the process of being birthed but are not yet? Emergent thinkers are those with such a lens that they walk into this future with optimism and without fear. Desha Ubeda and Phillip Clayton are two such people. Matt and Lucas speak with them and consider what forms, practices and approaches of sacred community will emerge in the coming years.
Deshna is the director of ProgressiveChristianity.org. It’s a website worth checking out for resources, articles and liturgies. To find A Joyful Path, the Inner Wisdom Series, the progressive Christian spiritual curriculum referred to in the podcast check out http://progressivechristianity.org/.

We take a breather from our season theme of lenses, to hear from some of our local prophets. In this special bonus episode we offer you a showcase of artists who have featured on our podcast from a live event we held earlier this year. In it we asked our poets and prophets to reflect on the role their art played in their lives and in the world. It features 2 performance poets in Joel McKerrow & Cameron Semmens as well as hip-hop artist Dylan Joel.

Episode 2.7 – Shaia
Come on a journey with Lucas and Matt exploring the journey of growth and transformation. Alexander Shaia – psychologist, anthropologist and spiritual director, help us see what faith (and indeed scripture) looks like when we adopt this as our primary lens.
Specifically, he has developed a resource known as Quadratos – the name he has given to the discovery and creation of an ancient four-fold tool to aid the journey of growth and transformation. You can check it out at quadratos.com.
For further exploration check out his book “Heart and Mind: The Four-Gospel Journey for Radical Transformation.”
